Notes:

3A state championship. Recruited as a 230-pound defensive end and redshirted in 2007. Played nine games in ’08 and was credited with eight tackles, 2 1⁄2 for loss and 11⁄2 sacks. Played 12 games in ’09, starting four inside, and tallied 29-3-1 1⁄2. Missed two October contests with a bruised knee. Started 8-of-11 games in which he played in ’10 — four at tackle, four at end — and tallied 29-12-3. Sat out against Georgia and Vanderbilt because of a right ankle sprain. Had his ankle scoped in the spring of ’11. Recorded 65-10-5 1⁄2 with two batted passes in 13 starts in ’11. Team captain.

Positives:

Quick off the snap. Excellent foot speed and athletic movement skills. Flashes disruptive penetrating ability. Recorded the second-best 40 time among defensive tackles at the Combine, clocking as low as 4.78 seconds. Good range — can track down plays outside the box. Has played inside and outside. Has upside.

Negatives:

Did not invest in the weight room and functional strength reflects that. Does not translate speed to power. Slow to disengage. Plays tall and is too easily turned. On skates against double-teams. Inconsistent. See-and-go reactor. Does not recognize blocking schemes or feel pressure. Lacks bite. Disappears for stretches. Could require patience grasping complex schemes. Questionable toughness and motivation.

Summary:

Big, athletic, inconsistent, underachieving lineman still growing into his DT frame. Has raw, starter-caliber physical ability, but concerns about character, work ethic and competitiveness will affect his draft standing. Is in need of an NFL training program to improve his core strength, and will have to adopt a more professional approach in general to fulfill his potential.
