Adopted father died of a heart attack in January 2011. Two-way lineman who also kicked and played some fullback as a prep in Mississippi, where he also won a state weightlifting championship. Qualified out of high school but attended Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he redshirted in 2007 and started 11 games in ’08. With the Trojans in ’09, started all 13 games at left tackle while leading the team with 66 knockdowns, nine penalties and 3 1/2 sacks allowed. Started all 12 games at left tackle in '10 despite spraining his right ankle against Middle Tennessee. Made all 12 games at left tackle in '11.Positives:
Has a frame to support 330 pounds. Extremely athletic with loose hips and very good arm length. Plays on his feet with good balance and body control. Has heavy hands and strikes with pop in his punch (see Texas). Fiery on-field temperament — plays with aggression. Quick to the second level and effective leading in space. Showed very clean, piston-like footwork in Combine drills and appeared explosive changing direction. Humble, hardworking and down to earth.Negatives:
Is on the short side. Inconsistent technician and footwork in pass protection — can be stressed by quickness. Opens his shoulders and gives up the inside. Can play with more hip snap. Not a nasty finisher. Recorded a 251⁄2-inch vertical jump at the Combine. Has not regularly matched up against top competition and did not show well at the Senior Bowl.Summary:
An unrefined, athletic college left tackle with enough agility and arm length to stay on the edges in the pros, but could warrant more interest inside where he is protected and has help on each side. Has starting-caliber traits at multiple positions and could excel most in a zone-slide protection scheme.
