Was also an offensive lineman as a California prep. Saw action in 11 games as a true freshman in 2008, posting nine tackles, 1 1⁄2 tackles for loss and one sack. Recorded 16-3-0 with one pass batted down in 10 contests in ’09. Played in all 12 games in ’10, starting six, and registered 40-10 1⁄2-4 1⁄2. In ’11, recorded 35-5 1⁄2-2 with two forced fumbles in 13 starts. Did not run the 3-cone drill at the Combine because of a right hamstring strain.Positives:
Nice length and body potential. Quick first step off the edge. Flashes the ability to work through tackles when he gains extensions and churns his legs. Good body control. Collapses inside to stop the run when he sees it. Pursues hard — chases and ranges outside the box. Solid wrap tackler.Negatives:
Not explosive. Marginal weight-room strength. Stiff, slow-footed and awkward in movement. Tends to rise off the snap. Average flexibility and counter quickness. Stiff-shouldered at the top of his rush. Lets his feet stall. Needs to improve hand use. Could be harder at the point. Part-time starter. Accountability lapses and has to adopt a more dedicated, professional devotion to his craft.Summary:
Smooth-muscled, monotone college defensive end with some pass-rush upside. If motivated, has developmental ability and could warrant interest as a stand-up linebacker.
