Was a three-year varsity starter as a Texas prep. Contributed as a backup tight end and special-teams player in 12 games in 2008 but did not record any statistics. Saw action in eight games as a backup in ’09, catching one pass for 12 yards and rushing once for eight yards. Started 11-of-12 games at tight end in ’10, grabbing 39 passes for 526 yards (13.5-yard average) and two touchdowns. Caught 11-168-1 (15.3) in 12 games in ’11, making three starts as the No. 2 tight end.Positives:
Well-proportioned, muscular build. Good initial quickness and is flexible off the line to get into routes cleanly. Runs well and covers ground with a fluid stride. Nice bend and balance. Good, confident hands to catch outside his frame. Tracks well over his shoulder. Excellent leaping ability. Solid character.Negatives:
Weak, non-physical blocker — limited bulk and base strength to survive in line. Struggles to fit on linebackers and adjust to movement. Does not show much wiggle or strength after the catch. Ordinary production. Has been dinged up and durability could be an issue. Might need extra reps before he gets it. Is still learning what it means to adopt a professional work ethic.Summary:
Undersized, finesse, developmental H-back who was underutilized at Minnesota amidst a poor supporting cast. Has physical tools to work with but must prove he possesses the requisite motivation, competitiveness and toughness to succeed.
