Also earned letters in basketball (three) and track (four) as a North Carolina prep. Redshirted in 2007. Saw action in 13-of-14 games with five starts in ’08, recording 45 tackles, eight pass breakups and four interceptions with 21⁄2 tackles for loss and one forced fumble. Returned his first career interception 11 yards for a touchdown. In ’09, led the team in pass breakups after posting 69-12-2 with four tackles for loss and one forced fumble in 12 contests (nine starts). Had a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown. Suffered a right shoulder injury in the season opener and missed the next two weeks. Started all 13 games in ’10 and tallied 54-9-2 with three tackles for loss and one forced fumble. Was suspended for the ’11 season opener against South Carolina after being arrested outside a Greenville, N.C., nightclub in June on misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and resisting a police officer — was yelling and cursing in the street, was asked several times to leave but refused, then was arrested. Started the remaining 11 games at boundary cornerback and totaled 62-7-1 with four tackles for loss, 11⁄2 sacks and one forced fumble.Positives:
Thin ankles. Nice feet and hip flex to shadow in man coverage. Very good short-area quickness. Reacts quickly to run and is not afraid of contact. Has special-teams experience. Plays with a chip on his shoulder.Negatives:
Adequate size with short arms and small hands. Technique needs refinement. Lacks fluidity moving in reverse (tends to rise in his pedal). Average speed and leaping ability. Takes some questionable angles. Inconsistent, grab-and-drag tackler (selective physicality). Poor coachablility and has a short fuse. Suspect character needs to be investigated. Average showing at East-West Shrine Game game.Summary:
Light-footed, athletic, inconsistent, unstable cornerback whose stock slid as a senior. Has raw talent to play in the league, but worrisome intangibles might leave him undrafted.
