Was a standout basketball player and a highly regarded recruit as a prep. Redshirted in 2008. Saw action in all 14 games (six starts) in ’09 and grabbed 10 passes for 108 yards (10.8-yard average) and three touchdowns. Made all 13 starts at tight end in ’10, setting the school record for catches by a sophomore tight end after posting 33-373-1 (11.3). Was a consensus All-America selection and the winner of the Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end, in ’11 after setting school receiving records for a tight end with 50-598-8 (11.9).Positives:
Has an athletic build. Attacks the ball in the air and can make the difficult, one-handed grabs. Clean hands catcher. Tracks the ball well in the air. Dependable short-to-intermediate receiver. Barrels with good lean and urgency turning upfield after the catch. Plays all downs and seldom leaves the field. Good weight-room strength — bench-pressed 225 pounds 27 times at the Combine and has the bulk and frame to handle one-on-one blocking assignments. Highly productive. Highly competitive.Negatives:
Doesn’t give consistent effort in-line or on the move as a blocker. Lacks functional lower-body power and knee bend. Not a polished route runner — routes out of his cuts. Does not accelerate at the top of his routes and appears too monotone in transition. Not sudden and lacks elite speed to threaten the seams. Will struggle to separate vs. tight man coverage. Gave up on a badly thrown comeback route at the Combine. Was belligerent early in his career, known to argue with coaches.Summary:
Has the potential to become a solid, all-around tight end but is still very raw as a blocker and must prove committed to improving. Best traits are his hands and short-area receiving skills and can most readily help as a receiver.
