Notes: The Parade All-American was considered the No. 1 player in North Carolina as a prep after rushing for 20 touchdowns and recording 28 sacks. Saw action in eight games as a true freshman in 2009, making five tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks. Was suspended for the Meineke Car Care Bowl after taking a swing at a North Carolina State player in the regular-season finale. Started 12-of-13 games at right defensive end (did not start against Rutgers) in ’10, recording 49-13 1⁄2-7 with one pass batted down, one forced fumble and a blocked kick. Saw action in all 13 games in ’11, posting 29-4-2 with two passes batted down. Suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in the Independence Bowl against Missouri and did not participate in Combine drills.
Positives:Gets his hands on tackles and creates separation. Flashes ability to get underneath a tackle’s pads and walk him back. Can hold his ground and string plays to the boundary. Runs well and shows deceptive closing speed — can make plays from the backside when he wants to. Moves well laterally and can loop and stunt. Wrap tackler.
Negatives:Inconsistent. Average eyes, instincts and motor. Competitiveness, intensity and urgency are lacking. Duck-footed — does not gain enough ground with second and third steps. Stiff shoulders. Does not set a hard edge or use his hands violently. Lets his pads rise and gets washed inside. Has underachiever traits. Difficult to coach and will require a lot of extra attention managing him. Immature and egocentric. Average work habits. Durability will require evaluation.
Summary:Was relegated to the bench as a junior and suffered a season-ending knee injury in the final game that could force him to begin the season on physically-unable-to-perform list and leave him undrafted. Coachability concerns could limit opportunity.
