Notes: Prepped in Delaware, where he also played basketball through his junior year. Missed three games during his senior season because of a sprained ACL. Redshirted in 2007 (shoulder surgery) and did not play in ’08 (head). Appeared in seven games in ’09, starting three at right guard. Had shoulder surgery in December. Started all 12 games at left guard in ’10. Suffered a knee injury during ’11 spring practice, which required surgery but made all 13 starts in the fall at left guard. Did not perform shuttles at the Combine because of right hamstring injury.
Positives:Has a thick trunk, long arms and big hands. Good bend and balance. Good functional strength. Understands how to sink his weight and hold his ground — does not allow much penetration. Places his hands quickly, latches on and controls defenders. Leans on defenders and seals lanes (wins consistently in short areas). Handles line stunts. Shows the ability to recover. Sound and dependable. Subdued Connecticut DT Kendall Reyes.
Negatives:Needs to continue adding bulk to his frame. Average athletic ability and initial quickness. Does not blow people off the ball in the run game. Not an explosive puller — gets hung up in traffic and is inconsistent on the second level. Struggles to adjust to moving targets in space. Needs to improve finishing strength. Can do a better job keeping his head on a swivel (slow to help at times). Inconsistent intensity. Durability could be an issue given his injury history.
Summary:Big-framed, functionally strong blocker who is not flashy or overpowering, but has eventual starter capability in a slide-protection scheme. Should only improve as he develops physically and learns to maintain intensity play-to-play. Durability concerns could affect his draft standing.
