First name is pronounced “DAY-vin.” His father, Dave, was a running back in the NFL for 10 seasons with the New York Giants, New England Patriots and the New York Jets. Davin was a standout performer and four-year letterwinner in track as a Maryland prep. Played in all 13 games with two starts as a true freshman in 2008, rushing 89 times for 457 yards (5.1-yard average) and four touchdowns and catching nine passes for 79 yards (8.8-yard average) and no touchdowns. Tallied 99-338-6 (3.4) on the ground in 12 games (four starts) in ’09. Also contributed 14-175-1 (12.5) as a receiver. Led the team in rushing in ’10 despite not making any starts with 126-720-4 (5.7) and 6-59-0 (9.8) receiving in 13 games. Started 11-of-12 games in ’11 (gave way to extra receiver against Florida State), carrying 171-896-4 (5.2) and catching 17-141-1 (8.3). Fumbled eight times in 531 touches and gained 5.0 yards per carry. Team captain.Positives:
Built low to the ground with a thick, muscular physique. Bench-presses twice his weight. Plays bigger than his size. Good quickness. Finishes runs. Takes care of the football. Shows willingness as a blocker. Hardworking and durable. Team-first and football-smart. Has NFL bloodlines.Negatives:
Lacks ideal height. Tight hips. Has below-average timed speed. Average vision and instincts. Wastes movement going east and west. Not elusive or creative. Minimal receiving production (lets throws into his body). Limited base strength as a blocker and will duck his head and whiff.Summary:
Short, thickly built, between-the-tackles runner who was a steady, durable player for the Terps, but did not take his game to another level with a more prominent role as a senior. Does not excel as a receiver, blocker or return man to compensate for his lack of size and average athletic traits. NFL pedigree could improve his chances.
