Notes: A four-star prospect as a Texas prep where he was a dual-threat quarterback. Saw action in five games as a true freshman in 2008, completing 16-of-33 passes for 268 yards (48.5 percent) with three touchdowns and one interception and rushing 13 times for 27 yards (2.1-yard average) and one touchdown. Redshirted in ’09. Led the Ducks to the ’10 BCS championship game in his first season as a starter after throwing for 222-361-2,881-30-9 (61.5) and rushing 93-486-5 (5.2) in 13 games. Accounted for 3,349 yards of total offense — second-best mark in school history. Set school records for career (66) and single-season touchdown passes in ’11 after throwing for 211-339-2,761-33-7 (62.2) and rushing for 56-206-3 (3.7) in 13 starts. Suffered a left knee injury against Arizona State and missed the Colorado game. Has already graduated. Had a 23-3 record in 26 career games.
Positives:Quick-footed and athletic to roll the pocket or avoid the rush. Scrambles and moves the chains. Fluid, over-the-top release. Can drop in the deep ball with accuracy. Productive playmaker for a prolific offense. Experience playing big games. Carries a swagger.
Negatives:Has a lean build and needs to bulk up to take a pounding. Could stand to shorten his delivery. Average arm strength. Production was inflated by spread system and run-after-catch yardage. Could require patience adapting to a sophisticated playbook. Character and coachability need to be looked into. Would have faced competition for starting spot as a senior.
Summary:Has physical talent similar to Steelers 2008 fifth-rounder Dennis Dixon, another Oregon product, but is a developmental project at this stage. Could have used more seasoning but financial considerations pushed him into the draft.
