Prepped in Texas before attending Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College for two years — had 44 tackles, seven pass breakups and six interceptions in 2007 (10 games) and 38 tackles and one interception in ’08 (10 games). Redshirted in ’09 after undergoing shoulder surgery. Started 10-of-13 games in ’10, logging 57-4-4 with two tackles for loss. Also returned 20 kickoffs for 605 yards (30.2-yard average) and two touchdowns. Was limited by a hamstring injury for most of the ’11 season, logging 22-5-0 with one tackle for loss, one sack and one forced fumble in nine games (two starts at cornerback). Missed six contests.Positives:
Well-built with good size and muscle definition. Good zone awareness. Can high-point interceptions. Supports the run urgently — quick to step up and is a solid, willing tackler. Confident and competitive. Is tough and will play hurt. Has special-teams experience.Negatives:
Tight hips and stiff movement skills. Limited suddenness, acceleration and recovery burst. Gives up separation at the break point. Clocked the worst 3-cone drill time amongst all cornerbacks at the Combine (7.33 seconds). Just a functional returner. Has struggled to stay in one piece and has a history of shoulder problems.Summary:
Injury-prone, athletic cornerback with ball skills, tackling ability and special-teams value, though his deficient suddenness and agility could dictate a move to safety. Compares favorably to Chicago Bears 2008 fifth-round pick Zack Bowman.
