Played quarterback as a Georgia prep and led his team to back-to-back state titles in addition to being the MVP in baseball. Enrolled at Virginia Tech in January 2007 and participated in spring practice but decided to transfer after a campus shooting that left 33 students dead. Transferred to Vanderbilt and sat out the ’07 season. Played in all 13 games in ’08, starting the final 10 contests, and grabbed 28 passes for 209 yards (7.5-yard average) and four touchdowns. Led all of the nation’s freshman tight ends in receiving. Started 8-of-12 contests in ’09 and caught 29-367-1 (12.7). Led the team in receiving in ’10 after recording 34-425-3 (12.5) in 12 starts; and 16-243-1 (15.2) in 10 starts (11 games played) as a senior. Missed two games with an ankle injury.Positives:
Has a big frame and nice length with room to pack on weight. Fluid strider with good athletic ability and coordination for his body type (see 73-yard TD vs. Wake Forest). Settles into short-to-intermediate zones and presents a sizable target. Works to gain positioning as a blocker and is effective when he has an angle. Durable, smart and confident. Good character.Negatives:
Needs to get functionally stronger. Marginal base strength, physicality and sustain as an in-line blocker. Is linear and vulnerable to the jam off the line of scrimmage. Builds to speed. Throttles down to cut. Lets some throws into his body. Average run strength and limited elusiveness after the catch.Summary:
Lean, long-levered, finesse pass catcher who will have to split out and move to survive, though he is not fast or athletic enough to warrant draftable consideration. Practice-squad candidate.
