Notes: Played multiple positions as an Alabama prep, including throwing for more than 3,000 yards and also 33 touchdowns as a senior quarterback. Also participated in basketball and baseball. Was scheduled to redshirt in 2008 but played in seven of the last eight games, grabbing seven passes for 98 yards (14.0-yard average) and zero touchdowns. Appeared in all 13 games in ’09 as a reserve and special-teams player, catching 7-50-0 (7.1). Made two starts — against Virginia Tech at H-back and vs. LSU at tight end. Spent the ’10 season as a backup and on special teams, receiving 6-55-0 (9.2) in 13 games. Was the starter at H-back in ’11, making 10-of-13 starts and grabbing 34-356-4 (10.5).
Positives:Versatile — lined up everywhere and was put in motion. Competitive blocker and can be used on the move. Likes to play and it shows — plays with urgency. Fluid linear movement. Secures what he gets his hands on. Reliable short receiver/safety valve. Catches and turns upfield. Personal protector on the punt team. Generally plays with awareness.
Negatives:Does not look the part. Needs to get stronger. Does not play with pop or power in his hands. Lacks bulk/finishing strength to win point-of-attack collisions. Overmatched vs. strong defensive ends. Tends to bend at the waist and miss blocks. Average athletic ability. Can be knocked off routes.
Summary:Dependable, versatile, H-back/thud-and-steer, move blocker who elevated his profile by snagging a team-best seven catches in the BCS championship victory over LSU and earning a Senior Bowl invite. Will have to get by on savvy, competitiveness and effort to compensate for average athletic traits and strength deficiency.
