Two-way lineman also threw the shot put as a Virginia prep. Redshirted in 2007. Started 11-of-12 games at right tackle in ’08 — suffered a thigh bruise and bruised kidney in the season opener that cost him two games and a start. Started all 26 games in which he played — 12 in ’09 and 14 in ’10. Sat out against Duke in ’09 (ankle). Strained a pectoral muscle in early August ’11, but was ready for the season. Was a first-team All-ACC performer in ’11, making all 14 starts at right tackle. Graduated.Positives:
Experienced, durable, four-year starter. Gets into blocks quickly. Nice base, balance and leverage. Works to maintain positioning and can shuffle, slide and mirror. Fights with his hands and can pop and recoil. Good awareness — alert to movement and blitzes and switches off rushers. Confident, competitive demeanor. Solid character — respected, lighthearted guy. Motivated and hardworking with leadership qualities.Negatives:
Lacks length to remain outside — has short arms and small hands, which affects his ability to sustain. Needs to get stronger (light in the pants). Average power. Cannot blow defenders off the ball. Pedestrian foot athlete. Not a natural bender. Occasionally dips his head and does not square up his target. Cut blocking needs work. Limited upside.Summary:
A scrappy college right tackle who lacks the length and foot quickness to handle edge speed in the pros, DeChristopher’s best chance to stick will be at left guard in a zone system. Experience and intangibles give him an opportunity, but he did not elevate his game as a senior, and will have to answer questions about his core strength and athletic ability to be more than a backup.
