Notes: Highly recruited Parade All-American and Ohio’s Gatorade Player of the Year who also played basketball as a prep. As a true freshman in 2007, missed the first two games of the season (knee scope), before playing eight games and recording seven tackles, zero for loss and zero sacks. Played all 12 games as a reserve in ’08, posting 18-2-1 with one forced fumble. Played all 13 games in ’09, starting the final 11 at left defensive end, and produced 38-4 1/2-3 1/2 with three batted passes and two forced fumbles. Played for three different coaching staffs during his time in Knoxville. Missed all of spring practice in 2010 with a knee injury then suffered a ruptured Achilles on the first day of fall practice in ’10 and missed the season. Ruptured the Achilles in his other leg in February ’11 but managed to return to practice in August and earned a starting job for the season opener. Team captain.
09/10/2011 (Injury Note): Tennessee DE Ben Martin sprained his ankle against Cincinnati. Martin was viewed as a draftable prospect two years ago, but after two Achilles tears and this most recent setback, it will be an uphill battle to not only allay concerns about his durability, but prove his skills have not diminished.
09/01/2011 (News): Preseason grade.
