Notes: Was an all-state selection in baseball as a Mississippi prep. Redshirted in 2007. Burst on to the scene in ’08, becoming the first freshman to start at quarterback for USM since 1991, and completed 261-of-454 passes (57.5 percent) for a school-record 3,128 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 13 starts. Contributed as the second-leading rusher with 155 carries for 508 yards (3.3-yard average) and nine touchdowns. Broke Brett Favre’s school record for TD passes by a freshman (15). Had an injury-shortened season in ’09, making five starts, throwing 108-156-1,165-10-2 (69.2) and rushing 50-63-2 (1.3). Suffered a Lisfranc fracture to his left foot in the fourth quarter against UAB and missed the final eight games. Returned to start all 13 games in ’10, throwing 278-442-3,103-20-6 (62.9) and rushing 145-452-10 (3.1). Graduated in December and began working on his MBA. Threw for 286-475-3,496-30-11 (60.2) in 14 starts in ’11. Also rushed 110-352-4 (3.2). Leaves Southern Miss as the school’s all-time passing leader after breaking Farve’s records with 10,727 yards, 81 touchdowns passes and 61.6 percent completion percentage. Selected as the Burlsworth Trophy winner, which is given to the nation’s outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on. Had a career record of 30-15 in 45 starts. Team captain.
Positives:Experienced, four-year starter. Good athlete. Steps up in the pocket and slides to avoid pressure. High release point. Good short accuracy. Extends plays with his legs, can tuck it and run and knows how to slide. Smart — shows some savvy to read defenses and scan progressively. Tough and extremely competitive — finds a way. Marry-your-daughter-type intangibles — very hardworking, well-respected leader with a professional makeup. Commands the huddle.
Negatives:Lacks ideal height. Operated exclusively out of the shotgun and will have to adapt to taking snaps from under center. Average arm strength. Labors to throw deep — hangs too many passes. Could stand to refine footwork and mechanics.
Summary:An athletic, experienced, move-the-pocket, short-to-intermediate passer who broke Brett Favre’s school passing records, Davis has the intelligence, work ethic and functional passing skill to minimally stick as a No. 3. Has the type of makeup to will his way into a lineup and vastly outplay his draft status in 5-7 years.
