Played quarterback and participated in basketball and track as a California prep. Earned Freshman of the Year honors from the Great West Conference after starting all 11 games as a true freshman at the boundary corner in 2008. Posted 42 tackles, 10 pass breakups and two interceptions with one tackle for loss and three forced fumbles. Started all 11 games in ’09 at the boundary corner and tallied 48-6-2 with three tackles for loss. Had a 47-yard interception return for a touchdown and was the main punt returner with 13 returns for 201 yards (a school-record 15.5-yard average) and zero touchdowns. Missed the ’10 spring game with a fractured wrist. Recorded 55-8-2 with one tackle for loss and one sack in 11 starts at boundary corner in ’10. Added 17-214-0 (12.6) as a punt returner. Posted 54-7-2 with half a tackle for loss in 10 games in ‘11. Also used as a kick returner with 8-144-0 (18.0) on punt returns and 14-361-0 (25.8) on kickoffs. Returned both interceptions for touchdowns — 100 yards against South Dakota State and a 52-yarder vs. Central Oklahoma. Broke a bone in his foot and didn’t play against North Dakota. Team captain.Positives:
Compactly built and well-proportioned. Smooth, quick-twitch athletic ability and movement skills — turns over fluid stride. Low, balanced pedal. Quick-footed and loose-hipped. Can run vertical and is explosive in short area. Sudden plant-and-drive. Terrific range. Effective in man or zone and can line up over the slot. Confident, explosive returner. Aggressive, energetic temperament. Four-year starter. Bench-pressed 225 pounds 19 times at Combine. Solid character. Smart, tough, vocal leader.Negatives:
Lacks ideal height and has very short arms. Limited functional strength and is not equipped to press. Average eyes and instincts — hesitates on play-action and is vulnerable to double moves. Technique needs refinement. Loses phase and shows inconsistent downfield ball reactions. Cannot set a hard edge — struggles to get off blocks and does not always leverage properly in contain. Underpowered, low tackler (leaves feet).Summary:
Smallish, speedy, sudden, flexible nickel back who is not yet a finished product, but has upside and could contribute readily on special teams while he develops into a sub-package player.
