A person familiar with the discussions says Miami Dolphins safety Yeremiah Bell has been told he'll be released to create cap space.|||||||
The person confirmed the discussions to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins hadn't announced a move. The Dolphins will save more than $4 million in cap space, which could be used in negotiations with quarterback Alex Smith, who visited the team Sunday. Bell, 34, has played his entire eight-year career with Miami and became a starter in 2006. He made the Pro Bowl in 2009 and led the team in tackles each of the past four seasons.
Bell re-signed Monday with the Miami Dolphins after missing the final 15 games last year because of a ruptured Achilles' tendon.|||||||
Bell signed a one-year deal. His best season was in 2006, when he started 11 games and had two sacks, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He was a sixth-round draft choice by Miami in 2003.
Bell will miss the rest of the season with a torn left Achilles' tendon. Bell was hurt in the third quarter of Sunday's season-opening loss at Washington.|||||||
Bell bolstered the defense when he became a starter midway through last season. He'll likely be replaced by Travares Tillman, who started 17 games in 2005-06, and 2006 first-round draft pick Jason Allen may be moved from cornerback to provide depth at safety, according to Dolphins coach Cam Cameron.
Bell suffered an injured calf during the Dolphins' 16-13 overtime loss at Washington on Sunday.|||||||
If Bell struggles with the injury, Travares Tillman could replace him in Week 2 against Dallas.
Bell is expected to start at strong safety this week instead of Travares Tillman. Bell has started the last two games including Oct. 22 against the Packers at safety. He has 11 tackles and one sack.|||||||
