The Texans overcame a 17-point third-quarter deficit to win at Washington on Sunday, running their record to 2-0 and keeping a one-game lead in the AFC South and perhaps signaling they are developing into legitimate contenders.

Two Texans underwent MRIs Monday on their ankles. WR Andre Johnson has a mild sprain and is listed as day-to-day but is expected to start in Week Three. TE James Casey is expected to be out with an ankle sprain.

Smith, an unrestricted free agent courted for his versatility, has agreed to terms with the Houston Texans, his Nashville-based agent, Brian Parker, confirmed. Smith's four-year deal includes $6.25 million in guaranteed money in the first year and averages about $3 million a season.||||||| An eight-year veteran who started 16 games over the last two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Smith is expected to challenge for a starting job at guard or center with the Texans. He also was courted by the Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals.

The Chiefs signed Smith to a two-year contract.||||||| Smith has been primarily a tackle in his six-year career, but is expected to compete for the center spot with Kansas City, the Chiefs said Monday. The 6-foot-4, 296-pound Smith played the last two seasons with the New York Jets, primarily as an offensive lineman and on special teams. He's also played with the Miami Dolphins, which picked him in the third round in 2003.

Smith, who played in nine games with the Jets last season, re-signed with New York on Monday.||||||| Smith, who is entering his fifth NFL season, signed with the Jets last September. He was originally drafted by Miami in the third round in 2003. He has played in 29 NFL games, starting 18.

Smith, a backup offensive lineman, re-signed with the New York Jets for one year, agent Brian Parker said Saturday.||||||| The versatile unrestricted free agent spent most of last season with the Jets, where he was reunited with offensive line coach Tony Wise, who coached him in Miami. The Dolphins selected Smith in the third round of the 2003 draft and released him last year.
