Miller and Kevin Vickerson are appealing fines they said they received from the NFL for hits on Carolina quarterback Cam Newton last weekend.||||||| Miller's $21,000 fine was for a low hit, but Denver's star linebacker insists he was blocked into Newton and didn't come anywhere near his knees. Miller said he had two fines overturned on appeal last year for hits on Mark Sanchez and he feels he has another strong case.

Miller has won a two-man race with 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith for the 2011 Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.||||||| The second Bronco to win the award - LB Mike Croel got it in 1991 - Miller made 64 tackles and had 11 1/2 sacks despite missing one game and playing the last four contests with a cumbersome cast protecting his surgically repaired right thumb.

The outside linebacker and No. 2 overall pick in the draft looked like a lock for Defensive Rookie of the Year honors when he collected 10 1/2 sacks in his first 10 games. Then, at the end of his best performance yet, a 10-tackle masterpiece at San Diego, Miller tore ligaments in his right thumb making a big play against the Chargers on Nov. 27.||||||| He hasn't nearly as troublesome since, collecting just a single sack this month while San Francisco's Aldon Smith closes in on Jevon Kearse's rookie record of 14 1/2 sacks.

Miller, who missed last week with a thumb injury, practiced for the second straight day on Thursday.||||||| The rookie is expected to play Sunday against Chicago with a cast over his right thumb.
