Wilfork says he doesn't want to be a distraction to his Patriots teammates after a report that he was paid $50,000 while at the University of Miami.|||||||
The New England nose tackle said in the team's locker room Monday that the week since the Yahoo! Sports report was posted last Tuesday had been tough. But he says he has moved forward and is focused on his career. The Yahoo! Sports report said booster Nevin Shapiro paid Wilfork $50,000 as a recruiting tool to sign with a sports agency that Shapiro said he co-owned.
Wilfork has agreed to a long-term contract that will keep him with the New England Patriots.|||||||
Terms of the deal were not disclosed on Saturday. ESPNBoston.com, citing an NFL source, said the contract was for five years and $40 million.

The Patriots said Monday they made the move to continue negotiating a long-term agreement with the six-year veteran. They said that agreement has been their top contractual priority and Wilfork remains a significant part of their plans. Wilfork has said he would not be happy if the team put the franchise tag on him.

Players drafted in Wilfork's position - 21st in the first round - are no longer allowed to sign contracts longer than five years.
