The Rams signed Gholston, the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft but so far a bust in the NFL.||||||| Gholston had no sacks in three seasons with the New York Jets, who tried to convert him to an outside linebacker. He did not play last season after getting released by the Chicago Bears in late August. The Rams could use some depth at defensive end behind starters Chris Long and Robert Quinn. Long was the second overall pick in 2009.

The New York Jets are converting former No. 1 draft pick Vernon Gholston into a defensive end after two disappointing years at outside linebacker.||||||| Coach Rex Ryan says Gholston will back up veteran Shaun Ellis, helping the Jets get more athletic at the position. Speaking Saturday after the draft, Ryan says the recent signing of Jason Taylor enabled the team to make the move. Gholston was the sixth overall pick in 2008 but has failed to become the impact player the Jets envisioned as a hybrid linebacker-defensive end. The former Ohio State star has not gotten a sack in a regular-season game.

Jets coach Rex Ryan has declared Gholston will be one of his personal projects this season, eager to tap into the potential that excited New York so much that it drafted him sixth overall last year. Gholston certainly looks the part of a pass-rushing force with his massive arms and shoulders. He's soft spoken off the field, though, and he's not a trash talker or a showboat, causing the misperception that perhaps Gholston lacks the fire to truly be an NFL star.||||||| The Jets need Gholston to play better to help a defense that wore down as the season went along.
