He sprained an ankle Sunday against Cleveland and said he was likely a game-time decision.
Smith has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for his horse-collar tackle that prevented a touchdown on an interception return in the season-opening win over the Giants. When asked Wednesday if it was money well spent, Smith said it was, because the play helped his team. He said he wasn't asking for any help from his teammates to pay the fine.|||||||
Early in the second quarter of the Sept. 5 opener, linebacker Michael Boley intercepted a pass near midfield. He wasn't tackled until Smith made a "last effort" and grabbed him at the 2. The ball was marked at the 1, and the Giants failed to on three plays to get in the end zone before kicking a field goal for a 3-0 lead. Dallas won 24-17.
Smith was partially suited up the day after each left Wednesday's practice with a knee injury.|||||||
Smith's status is to be determined. He wasn't carrying his helmet and only watched as fellow linemen did some individual drills.

Smith is expected to start right away at right tackle, replacing Marc Colombo, with an eye on grooming him as the eventual starter at left tackle. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Smith was the ninth player taken in the draft after two standout seasons as a starter for Southern Cal. The youngest player in the entire draft, he doesn't turn 21 until December. He was the first offensive lineman Jerry Jones has ever drafted in the first round.
Smith already has a claim to fame in Dallas Cowboys lore. He is the first offensive lineman drafted in the first round by Jerry Jones. Since Smith is only 20, and the Cowboys took him with the ninth overall pick, they are counting on him to grow into something a lot more special.|||||||
Smith's arrival likely means the departure of right tackle Marc Colombo. "I think I have the potential to be a Pro Bowler," Smith said, pausing for about two seconds then adding, "and be a Hall of Famer."
