The San Francisco 49ers are going back to Smith as their starting quarterback while leaving open the possibility they might switch to Alex Smith at any time.||||||| Coach Mike Singletary said Thursday that Troy Smith will start Sunday’s pivotal NFC West game against the St. Louis Rams in place of Alex Smith, who started San Francisco’s last two games. The coach also said he wouldn’t hesitate to change quarterbacks during the game if the situation calls for it. “We could possibly use them both,” Singletary said. “The game will dictate it.'

Mike Singletary is keeping mum on his starting quarterback. The coach has made up his mind on who will get the call for San Francisco's must-win game Sunday at St. Louis. He just isn't saying which guy named Smith will be under center for the 49ers. "It depends on how the game goes," Singletary said Tuesday.||||||| Smith 1 or Smith 2? Singletary says it might just be both. He has talked to both quarterbacks and insists each will get his share of reps in practice this week to be ready to play.

Alex Smith is the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback yet again. Coach Mike Singletary made the announcement on his regular KNBR radio show Tuesday morning and the team later tweeted a reference to it.||||||| The move comes a day after Singletary said he was contemplating the switch from Troy Smith back to the 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick following a 34-16 loss at Green Bay on Sunday. The 49ers face a must-win game at home Sunday against NFC West rival Seattle.

Smith completed 11 of 23 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown and one interception Monday in a 27-6 win at Arizona.||||||| Smith is nothing more than a game manager at this point in his career and the former Ohio State star should only be used under extreme circumstances.

For now, Smith is the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. That could change in the next few days if Alex Smith is healthy enough to go by Sunday's game with St. Louis.||||||| Coach Mike Singletary said Troy Smith would take all the snaps with the first-team offense in Wednesday's practice, though he didn't rule out Alex Smith taking back his old job if his separated, non-throwing left shoulder has improved enough to play against the Rams. Singletary said Alex Smith still hadn't been medically cleared to play since getting hurt in a loss at Carolina on Oct. 24.
