Scheffler and running back Kevin Smith have collided at practice. Smith was coming out of the end zone and Scheffler was running a route toward the same end zone when they hit each other hard Wednesday.|||||||
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Scheffler got up relatively quickly and rolled his neck as he walked back toward the middle of the field. Smith is a starter and Scheffler is also a key player in Detroit's offense.
The Detroit Lions and Scheffler have agreed to a three-year extension that includes a $2 million signing bonus. Scheffler confirmed the agreement Saturday night. He has 24 receptions for 212 yards and a touchdown this season.|||||||
Detroit acquired Scheffler from Denver in April in a three-team trade. The Broncos drafted him in the second round of the 2006 draft after he starred at Western Michigan and Chelsea (Mich.) High School. He has 162 career receptions for 2,108 yards and 15 TDs.

The Eagles have dealt this year's fifth-round pick to the Broncos, who are sending tight end Scheffler to the Lions, who will trade linebacker Ernie Sims to Philly. Scheffler, a restricted free agent, had been skipping the Broncos' offseason program. Drafted in the second round of the 2006 draft out of Western Michigan, he scored a career-low two touchdowns despite starting a career-high nine games last season.
Scheffler had five receptions for 75 yards and touchdown, but it wasn't enough as the Broncos were overwhelmed 52-21 at San Diego on Sunday in their season finale.|||||||
Scheffler had been limited to two catches and 56 yards combined over his last two games. The third-year pro totaled 40 receptions, finishing third on the team this season with a career-high 645 yards overall.
