Davis will not participate in Saturday's Fan Fest back in Charlotte but could return to practice next week. He hasn't practiced since Sunday.That's encouraging news for Davis, who's trying to become the first known NFL player to return from three torn ACLs to the same knee. Davis tore his right ACL last September for the third time in three years and missed 14 games on injured reserve.
A person familiar with the situation says Davis has agreed to forego his $8 million signing bonus and take a pay cut to return to the Panthers.|||||||
The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because no public announcement has been made. Davis, who is trying to comeback from three torn ACLs in three years, has agreed to forego the signing bonus he was due and has taken a cut in base salary from $2.25 million to $700,000.
Davis has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee for the third time in less than 23 months. Davis shared news of the injury on his Twitter account. "I would like 2 take the time and thank every1 that has supported me over my career," he wrote. "Unfortunately, I have re torn my acl. Thx 4 da prayers!!"|||||||
Davis first tore his right ACL on Nov. 8, 2009 against New Orleans. He tried to make it back for the next season but re-tore his ACL in the June minicamps. Davis had more than a year to recover from that second surgery and the Panthers felt like he'd be ready to go this season.
Davis says it "wasn't worth the risk" to try to play this season after two major knee surgeries in less than a year, but is confident Carolina will re-sign him.|||||||
Davis tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last November, then suffered the same injury seven months later in an offseason workout. Davis had said he was determined to play this season, but acknowledged he isn't 100 percent.
