Sunday's announcement to waive McClain comes as a surprise. He started 12 games last season as rookie after being selected 65th overall by the Panthers. He's the latest third-round draft pick to fail with the Panthers, joining former defensive tackles Corvey Irvin and Atiyyah Ellison and running back Eric Shelton as busts.
A person familiar with the situation says the Carolina Panthers are placing both starting rookie defensive tackles - McClain and Sione Fua - on injured reserve. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because moves have not been announced.|||||||
Fua and McClain were both third-round draft picks this year and have been starters since week one. However, Fua suffered a significant right hamstring strain prior to Sunday's game against Tampa Bay and didn't play. McClain sprained his left knee during the first half and did not return.
The Panthers have reached agreement with their last remaining draftee, third-round selection Terrell McClain. The team announced the deal Monday. McClain is a 6-foot-2, 297-pound defensive tackle out of South Florida who was the 65th overall pick in last spring's NFL draft. McClain was all-Big East first team selection his senior year.
