An illness running through the Kansas City Chiefs the past few weeks kept running back Jamaal Charles, linebacker Tamba Hali and left tackle Donald Stephenson out of practice Wednesday.|||||||
Coach Romeo Crennel said that Hali and Stephenson were sent home soon after arriving at the team's practice facility.
The Chiefs have waived linebacker Cameron Sheffield to make roster space for Hali, who was suspended for Week 1 for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.|||||||
Hali did not count against the Chiefs' 53-man roster while he was suspended for the season-opener against Atlanta. He's eligible to return for this week's game at Buffalo. Hali is coming off a standout season in which he had 12 sacks and reached his first Pro Bowl.
The NFL has suspended Hali of the Kansas City Chiefs for the season-opener against Atlanta for violating its policy on substance abuse. The league announced the suspension in a brief statement Monday without disclosing details.|||||||

A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that Hali and the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a five-year deal worth $60 million.|||||||
The person, who spoke late Wednesday on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made, said $35 million of the contract is guaranteed. The person also said that Hali will be at training camp Thursday afternoon on the campus of Missouri Western State University. Hali had been designated as the Chiefs' franchise player after a breakthrough season in which he led the AFC with 14 1/2 sacks.

The non-exclusive tag was placed on Hali on Wednesday. He can negotiate with other teams, but the Chiefs have the right to match any offer or receive two first-round draft choices for letting him go elsewhere. Hali led the AFC with 14 1/2 sacks this season and was a late addition to the AFC Pro Bowl roster. He also had 50 tackles, 19 quarterback pressures and four forced fumbles. He was the Chiefs' first-round pick in the 2006 draft.
