The Panthers placed Martin on injured reserve after he injured the ACL and MCL in his right knee in Carolina's 27-21 loss to the Kansas City on Sunday. He becomes the 12th Carolina player to be placed on injured reserve this season.||||||| Martin, a four-year veteran, was a two-year starter for the Panthers before losing his starting job to free agent pickup Haruki Nakamura in training camp. Martin played in 12 games in a reserve role and finished the season with 23 tackles and one forced fumble.

The NFL has fined Martin $40,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit in Sunday's loss to Cleveland, with the hefty penalty coming in part because he's a repeat offender. Martin confirmed the fine for the hit on Browns tight end Evan Moore in the locker room on Wednesday but declined to speak to reporters.||||||| Martin has been on the NFL's radar since Week 1, when he was docked $5,000 for a hit on New York Giants tight end Kevin Boss that gave Boss a concussion. The play was in a video sent to teams as the league soon began a crackdown on dangerous hits.

Boss has been ruled out of Sunday's game against Indianapolis.

Panthers have come to terms with second-round pick Sherrod Martin on Friday, putting all Carolina rookies under contract before the start of training camp. The cornerback from Troy gets a four-year deal, but his agent, Hadley Engelhard, did not reveal financial figures.||||||| Martin is expected to become Carolina's nickelback behind starters Chris Gamble and Richard Marshall. The agreement comes two days before the Panthers report to camp and marks the second straight season the Panthers have avoided a rookie holdout. First-rounder Jon Beason missed the first eight days of training camp in 2007.
