The Tennessee Titans have released Smith a year after signing him to boost their defense.|||||||
The Titans signed Smith in July 2011 hoping to bring his experience and size to the defense. But Smith started only six of 15 games last season with 44 tackles and one sack, and the Titans have picked four tackles in the past two drafts.
An agent for Shaun Smith says the defensive lineman has agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans. Neil Schwartz confirmed the deal to The Associated Press. Tennessee has declined comment on any deals until the team is able to sign veterans Friday afternoon.|||||||
Smith, an eight-year veteran, spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs and had 56 tackles and one sack with 10 starts. He has 208 tackles and three sacks in 79 career games. The 6-foot-2, 325-pound lineman even scored a touchdown in a 42-24 win against the Seahawks last season, taking a handoff from Matt Cassel and running a yard to the end zone. Smith was also fined $10,000 in September for grabbing San Francisco offensive lineman Anthony Davis in the groin area.

The 6-foot-2, 325-pound Smith has played in 63 games, including 27 starts, with New Orleans, Cincinnati and Cleveland. He has 196 tackles and two sacks during a career that began with the Saints in 2004. Smith began his NFL career as a rookie free agent in 2003 with Dallas, where he was a member of the practice squad. After one year with New Orleans, he played for the Bengals from 2004 through 2006 and the Browns for two years before returning to Cincinnati last year.
The Bengals signed Smith on Wednesday, two days after run-stopping lineman Domata Peko had surgery on his right knee that will sideline him for a few weeks.|||||||
Smith played for the Bengals from 2004-06, starting six games. He played for the Browns the last two years and had been out of the NFL since Detroit released him on Sept. 5. Smith played in two games for Las Vegas of the United Football League. "I was training in Arizona every day, but there's nothing like conditioning with pads on and playing the game," Smith said.
The Cleveland Browns have released Smith.|||||||
Agent Neil Schwartz said Smith informed him that he has been let go by the team. The Browns have no immediate comment but coach Eric Mangini is expected to address Smith's status at a news briefing on Saturday. He played two seasons with Cleveland after signing as a free agent in 2007. He made nine starts last season and finished with 47 tackles in 11 games.
