PLAYER NEWS
The New York Giants have told center and player representative Shaun O'Hara and guard Rich Seubert that they will be released. A source close to each veteran told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the team told the players they would be cut on Thursday in what are salary-cap moves.|||||||
O'Hara, 34, who was the starting center since 2004, was limited to six games last season because of ankle and foot injuries. He had surgeries on both in the offseason. O'Hara, who played at Rutgers and is a local fan favorite, has been the Giants' player representative in recent years and he voted in Washington on Monday on the agreement that ended the 4 1/2-month lockout.
O'Hara practiced on a limited basis Thursday and Friday and sounded confident that he would play for the first time since being sidelined with a sprained right foot six games ago.|||||||
If O'Hara starts at center, Rich Seubert would move back to left guard. Kevin Boothe started at left guard last week. "I feel good," O'Hara said after practice Friday. "I feel relevant again, which is nice, and I'm looking forward to being with my teammates and contributing. Hopefully, I can play half as good as Rich."
O'Hara has been ruled out for Week 5 against the Houston Texans.|||||||
O'Hara has now missed three consecutive games as he continues to deal with a left ankle injury.
O'Hara has always prided himself on his toughness. But the pain that has spread around the Giants' starting center's left ankle from Achilles' tendinitis has finally ended his preseason.|||||||
After watching O'Hara battle through the pain from the start of training camp, doctors put the foot in a hard cast Thursday. Starting left guard Rich Seubert will start the team's third preseason game Saturday in Baltimore. O'Hara said he hoped this would enable him to start the regular season opener Sept. 12 against Carolina. But the reality is that the 11th-year veteran will have to deal with his condition throughout the season.
O'Hara is still out with swelling in his left ankle.|||||||
O'Hara has not practiced since Sunday, when he ran conditioning drills and took part in a light workout. He has missed six practices. An MRI showed only swelling around the joint. Coach Tom Coughlin hopes to have the 33-year-old back at practice on Monday.
