The New York Jets have restructured the contract of Holmes, creating additional salary cap room. Holmes, coming off a serious foot injury, was due to make $11 million in base salary, with $7.5 million guaranteed. Details of the restructuring, first reported by ESPN on Tuesday, weren't immediately available.|||||||
Holmes, who signed a five-year, $45 million contract in 2011, would have cost the Jets an $11.25 million cap hit if he had been released. But Holmes agreed to restructure his deal to help the Jets add some cap room. He injured the middle of his foot in Week 4, and missed the rest of the season. New offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said Monday that Holmes is expected to be healthy by training camp.
Holmes, sidelined for the season with a foot injury, says he won't start running until April and is uncertain if he'll be ready for the start of training camp next summer.|||||||
Holmes is still in walking boot and will have surgery in February to remove the metal plate that helped repair his left foot, which he injured on Sept. 30.

The Jets announced Wednesday that Holmes, who will require surgery, was placed on season-ending injured reserve. The team signed free agent wide receiver Jason Hill to help replace him. Holmes went down on the first play of the fourth quarter Sunday after catching a short pass. X-rays on the foot were negative, but the MRI exam results were sent to a foot specialist in North Carolina and the Jets' worst fears were confirmed.
Holmes is expected to be sidelined at least a few weeks after injuring his left foot during the New York Jets' 34-0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.|||||||
Coach Rex Ryan says Monday that X-rays on the wide receiver's foot were negative, but the team was awaiting results of an MRI exam, adding that they were "shipped to different places." Ryan adds that he's not sure "how many weeks" Holmes will be out, but says it looks "doubtful" for this week.
Holmes matched his career high with nine receptions in a 23-20 overtime win at Miami on Sunday, while his 147 yards were the most he's managed since joining the Jets in 2010.|||||||
Holmes' performance against the Dolphins came after he managed seven catches for 96 yards over the previous two games. He was also targeted 14 times by Mark Sanchez on Sunday, and they appear to be re-establishing their chemistry.
