A person familiar with the deal says the Kansas City Chiefs have signed kicker Ryan Succop to a $14 million, five-year contract extension. ESPN.com, citing anonymous sources, first reported the deal.|||||||
The contract includes a $2 million signing bonus, according to a person who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press late Friday because an official announcement had not been made. Succop was tagged with the "Mr. Irrelevant" nickname when he was the final pick of the 2009 draft. But he's been quite relevant for the Chiefs this season, hitting 24 of 29 field goal attempts, including 22 straight to match a franchise record.
Succop can move atop the franchise list for consecutive made field goals if he hits two more on Saturday against Oakland.|||||||
After a rough start to the season, Succop has made 21 in a row. Pete Stoyanovich has the franchise mark of 22 straight, ahead of such greats as Hall of Famer Jan Stenerud, Nick Lowery and Morten Anderson, the NFL's all-time leading scorer. Succop was 4 for 4 last Sunday against Green Bay, helping the Chiefs knock off the previously unbeaten Packers 19-14. He also kicked the winner in overtime earlier this season against San Diego.

Succop, taken with the 256th overall pick in last month's NFL draft, played 50 games in four seasons at South Carolina, hitting 71 percent of his field goals with a long of 55 yards. He hit 66 percent his senior season and converted all 30 of his PATs. The 6-foot-2 Succop worked out with the Chiefs during offseason practices and is expected to compete with second-year kicker Connor Barth for the starting job.
