Pontbriand was added to the AFC Pro Bowl squad on Monday, giving the Cleveland Browns at least four representatives for next month's game in Hawaii.|||||||
Pontbriand will join kick returner Joshua Cribbs, wide receiver Braylon Edwards and left tackle Joe Thomas in Honolulu for the Feb. 10 game. Before this season, the Browns hadn't had a player make the Pro Bowl since linebacker Jamir Miller in 2001.
Pontbriand, regarded as one of the NFL's premier long snappers, signed a four-year contract extension Tuesday with the Cleveland Browns, a deal that will keep the specialist with the club through 2011.|||||||
Former Browns coach Butch Davis was laughed at when he used a fifth-round draft pick (No. 142 overall) in 2003 to select Pontbriand, who played at Rice. Typically, teams will use one of their backup linemen to handle snapping duties. But Pontbriand has been steady and nearly flawless while snapping for punts, field goals and extra points in 59 games since '03.
Pontbriand will miss the rest of the season after being placed on injured reserve by the Cleveland Browns. The center, who served primarily as the team's long snapper, suffered a back injury in Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He will be replaced on the roster by Jody Littleton.|||||||
