The surprising move was made Monday, a little more than a week after the team drafted Georgia kicker Blair Walsh in the sixth round. Shortly after Longwell said goodbye to Vikings fans on Twitter, the team announced the decision in a brief news release with a prepared statement from coach Leslie Frazier thanking Longwell for his work and wishing him well.
Longwell says he has agreed to terms on a contract to return to the Minnesota Vikings. Longwell confirmed the four-year deal in a text message to The Associated Press on Wednesday night. The remaining financial terms were not immediately available. The Star Tribune of Minneapolis first reported the agreement.|||||||
Bringing the super reliable veteran back was considered a priority for the Vikings this year. The 36-year-old Longwell has spent the last five seasons in Minnesota. Last season, he went 17 for 18 on field goals and 30 for 31 on extra points.
It appears that Longwell will not be handling kickoffs next season.|||||||
The Vikings signed kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd on Tuesday. Lloyd handled kickoffs for the Carolina Panthers the last two seasons, leading the NFL with 30 touchbacks in 2008. He had 21 touchbacks last year, tied for fourth-most in the league.
Longwell converted 3-of-4 field goal attempts and also threw a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The Minnesota kicker was part of a faked field goal attempt that tied the game in the fourth quarter. He won the game with a 19-yard field goal in overtime.|||||||
