Fitzpatrick threw for 3,800 yards with 24 touchdowns and 16 interceptions last year and had been the Bills' primary starter since 2010. He said going back to being a backup will be a challenge after four years as a starter in Buffalo. He has a family with four children and had roots in Buffalo along with a six-year, $59 million deal he signed in October 2011.

The Bills' starting quarterback was cut 1 1/2 years after getting a six-year, $59 million contract extension. Fitzpatrick struggled after signing the new deal, and the Bills went 6-10 in 2011 and in 2012. Buffalo has not made the playoffs since 1999, the longest active streak in the NFL. For now, the Bills' No. 1 quarterback is Tarvaris Jackson.
