General manager Ruston Webster says the 6-foot-8, 315-pound Pitoitua gives the Titans the size they've been wanting at defensive end. Webster says they believe he'll help them defend the run with the flexibility of moving inside as well. Pitoitua is a four-year veteran with 37 games played in stops with the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. He started 10 of his 15 games last year with the Chiefs where he led the linemen with 32 tackles.
The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former New York Jets defensive end Ropati Pitoitua. The team announced the move Tuesday. Pitoitua was a free agent after playing in 22 games over the past two seasons with the Jets.|||||||
The former Washington State defensive end joined New York as an undrafted free agent in 2008, spending his first season in the league on the team's practice squad. Pitoitua played in eight games in 2009 before playing in 14 games last season. He has 22 tackles and one sack in his career.
The New York Jets have waived Pitoitua, who became expendable after the team drafted Quinton Coples last week.|||||||
Jets coach Rex Ryan often said he liked the size and speed of the 6-foot-8 Pitoitua, who had 19 tackles and a sack last season after returning from a torn Achilles tendon in the 2010 preseason. Pitoitua signed a one-year extension through 2012 last September, but the Jets have lots of depth on the defensive line.
Pitoitua has been ruled out of Monday night's game against the Dolphins with a knee injury.|||||||
Pitoitua's absence could give rookie defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis, the team's third-round draft pick, the opportunity to make his NFL debut after being inactive the first five games.
