Bernard was bothered by his shoulder in a minicamp in June, coach Tom Coughlin said. The shoulder has healed but Bernard, who signed a four-year, $16 million contract, hurt his hamstring working out on his own after the minicamp. Since the injury was sustained while he was away from the team, he was placed on the NFI list rather than the PUP list. The distinction is important because players who remain classified as NFI once the regular-season starts do not get paid.
The New York Giants gave new defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan a little more depth, signing Bernard as a free agent. Bernard signed what is believed to be a four-year $16 million Saturday night, hours after the Giants signed former Atlanta Falcons linebacker Michael Boley.|||||||
Bernard, entering his eighth season, started 55 of 103 regular season games with Seattle, 4-12 last year. He had 282 tackles, 29 sacks and seven fumble recoveries.
