Geathers had recorded 38 total tackles and 2.5 sacks in 11 starts with the Bengals before suffering the injury.
Geathers, a fourth-round draft pick from Georgia in 2004, signed a six-year extension Thursday that will pay him $14 million next season in various bonuses and salary, making him one of the team's top-paid players. He can earn $32.5 million in salary and bonuses over the six-year deal. His 10.5 sacks were the most by a Bengals player since Eddie Edwards had 13 sacks in 1983.|||||||
Now that Geathers is signed, the Bengals have to decide what to do with defensive end Justin Smith, who is a free agent. Smith has led the line in tackles in each of the last five seasons, and finished second to Geathers with 7.5 sacks last season.
The NFL said on Wednesday it wouldn't discipline Geathers for his hit on Kansas City quarterback Trent Green during Cincinnati's 23-10 victory on Sunday. Geathers' shoulder collided with Green's helmet, causing the quarterback's head to snap against the turf. He'll miss at least the next couple of weeks. The NFL said the injury was not a foul.|||||||
Geathers, who lost his starting spot, but remains a pass-rushing threat, wanted to handle the situation professionally. His teammates backed him up, saying he was not a dirty player. The Bengals play Cleveland this Sunday, with Geathers expected to resume his pass-rushing role.
