According to the Chicago Tribune, Gould has been placed on IR with a strained left calf suffered prior to Sunday's loss at Minnesota. The team has signed veteran Olindo Mare to handle kicking duties.|||||||
Gould was hurt during warm-ups. He was kicking midrange field goals shortly before the game started without trouble, but punter Adam Podlesh handled the opening kickoff. The Bears reached the Vikings 35-yard line late in the first quarter, and Podlesh came out to punt. Gould made the extra point after Chicago's second-quarter touchdown.

Gould blasted the field on Wednesday, saying he might have to think about re-signing with Chicago when his contract expires after next season. He told reporters he hopes to remain with the Bears but isn't sure he wants "to deal with that as I get older as a kicker." He says the field has been "a lot softer" than in previous years. Later, however, the Bears issued a statement from Gould in which he apologized to the grounds crew.

He hit 31 of 36 field goal attempts last season and made the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season, when he scored 143 points. Gould was an undrafted free agent out of Penn State in 2005. He first signed with New England, then spent time with Baltimore before going to the Bears in October of that year.
