Wednesday's move was essentially a formality. Doughty had little choice but to sign the tendered contract after the signing period for restricted free agents ended April 15. He has already been a regular participant in offseason minicamps and workouts. Doughty was a sixth-round pick in 2006. He has played in 45 games with 16 starts over four seasons. He returned from back surgery in 2008 to play in 15 games last year, starting nine.
Doughty has a high ankle sprain and probably will be listed as doubtful Sunday against the Chargers.|||||||

The Redskins' defense ranks last in the NFL in third-down conversions, allowing opponents to convert 51 percent of the time. Doughty, a fourth-year player, hasn't started a game since Oct. 5, 2008. He missed most of last season with a back injury.

Last year, Doughty played in only four games because of a back injury. His teammates voted him the winner of an annual award given to a player who overcomes injury and displays courage under difficult circumstances. Doughty has a hearing deficiency that requires him to wear hearing aids at meetings and rely on hand signals and lip-reading while on the field.
