The Patriots acquired Ojinnaka in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 23 and released him on Sept. 30 before he played a game for them. The Falcons had drafted him in the fifth round in 2006 out of Syracuse.

Ojinnaka will miss the first regular-season game at Pittsburgh on Sept. 12. The league announced the suspension on Thursday, citing its personal conduct policy. Police in suburban Gwinnett County said Ojinnaka was arrested in May 2009 on a simple battery charge after his wife confronted him over his contact with a female friend on the social networking site Facebook. He was accused of tossing her down some stairs and throwing her out of the house.

Ojinnaka, a fourth-year reserve drafted out of Syracuse in the fifth round of 2006, was charged with simple battery, said police spokesman David Schiralli in suburban Gwinnett County. Ojinnaka, who has started seven of 30 career games, told police his wife began the fight by attempting to stab him with a pen. Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts said Friday that coach Mike Smith had talked with Ojinnaka, but the team would have no further comment.
