Rivers was playing some of his best football this season until the fourth quarter when he was largely responsible for San Diego's loss. The first of his interceptions was returned for a touchdown and the second led to a Tampa Bay field goal that sealed the game for the Buccaneers.

It was a good sign for Rivers, who had been bad in two straight games. It was the sixth time in NFL history a quarterback had completed 90 percent or more of his passes, and tied Steve Young for fifth on that list. Rivers threw TD passes to Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd.
