Cox continued to make an impression during San Francisco's preseason opener against Minnesota last Friday, putting an exclamation point on the 49ers' 17-6 victory with an interception to end the Vikings' final offensive possession. The second-year cornerback has gained attention throughout training camp with his consistent play and is challenging for a role in coverage packages in a secondary that returns all four starters from last season, including two Pro Bowlers.

San Francisco announced the deal on the first day of NFL free agency Tuesday, a day after signing wide receiver Randy Moss to give him a second chance. The 25-year-old Cox didn't play in 2011, spending time with his family in Waco, Texas. He was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at his apartment in September 2010 after a night of partying.
Cox says he's able to focus on football even as he faces a sexual assault trial in October. The Denver Broncos' second-year cornerback participated in the team's first practice of training camp Thursday.|||||||
Coming off the field afterward, Cox told The Associated Press: "I just want to apologize for everything that's been going on. I'm truly grateful that football has started back up." He acknowledged his legal troubles still weigh heavily on him. If convicted, Cox faces between two years to life in prison. Cox has pleaded not guilty in the case. The document says the woman told police that doctors informed her she had become pregnant at about the time she went to Cox's apartment with friends and then passed out. The woman says she has no recollection of most of that night last September and wasn't sure anyone had sex with her until she learned she was pregnant. Cox pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault. He is free on $50,000 bail. His trial is scheduled for October.

District Court Judge Paul King on Wednesday sided with The Associated Press and The Denver Post, who argued for the document's unsealing. King ruled that neither prosecutors nor Cox defense attorney Harvey Steinberg presented sufficient evidence that the affidavit's release would jeopardize Cox's right to a fair trial. Cox is charged with two counts of sexual assault. Court documents say the alleged assault happened on Sept. 6.
