The Indianapolis Colts have given punter Pat McAfee the franchise tag, meaning he will be paid $2.977 million this season if he doesn't reach a long-term contract with the team. Under the franchise tag in 2013, a player is paid according to a formula based on salaries for the past five years at the position and their percentage of the total salary cap. With the non-exclusive tag, his team has the right to match any offer sheet, or get two first-round draft picks.|||||||
McAfee finished his fourth NFL season ranked fifth in the league in punting with a 47.9-yard average. His 40.3-yard net average was the best of his career. McAfee also handles kickoffs for Indianapolis.
McAfee has returned to practice, a day after being arrested for public intoxication and drawing a one-game suspension. McAfee, who missed practice on Wednesday, was not available for comment after a short Thursday morning session.|||||||
Police say McAfee was found early Wednesday morning with a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent, nearly twice the legal limit for driving in Indiana. Indianapolis suspended McAfee for one game on Wednesday, a little more than 12 hours after the 23-year-old was arrested for public intoxication. Police said McAfee took a pre-dawn swim in a city canal and told them "I am drunk" as he tried to explain why he was sopping wet in the Broad Ripple neighborhood, a trendy area known for its nightlife.|||||||

He was released from custody just before noon, about six hours after his arrest. "Very disappointed in what happened and once we have all of the information, we'll take action at that time."

McAfee told police that he was waiting for a friend to get him and added he planned to take a taxi home, the report said. He asked if he could walk home, but officers arrested him. They say he smelled of alcohol, his eyes were watery and bloodshot and his speech slurred. Officers said they had to help McAfee stand up after giving him a breath alcohol test.
The Colts signed punter-placekicker McAfee on Thursday.|||||||
McAfee's agent would not confirm the length of the contract, though the Colts have been offering four-year deals to players selected after the first round for the past several seasons.
