A person with knowledge of the deal says the San Diego Chargers have agreed in principle to a four-year contract with kicker Nick Novak.|||||||
Novak made 18 of 20 field goal attempts (90 percent) in 2012, the third-highest conversion rate in team history. He was signed on Sept. 29 after Nate Kaeding hurt his groin in practice two days before a game at Kansas City. Novak also kicked for San Diego in the final 15 games of 2011 after Kaeding was hurt on the season-opening kickoff.
Novak agreed Tuesday to a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers to replace the injured Nate Kaeding.|||||||
Novak, who was in training camp with the Chargers in 2010 and the New York Jets this season, has kicked in 22 NFL games, making 19 of 30 career field goal attempts (.633). He's played with Washington, Arizona and Kansas City.

The move comes as Nate Kaeding rehabs a groin injury sustained in practice prior to the Pro Bowl. Kaeding missed three field goals in San Diego's 17-14 playoff loss to the New York Jets. Novak was out of football last year. He kicked for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. Before that, he played for the Washington Redskins and Arizona Cardinals in 2005-06.
Novak was released on Tuesday and replaced by Connor Barth, who was beaten out by Novak in August.|||||||
Novak missed two field goals in last week's 34-10 loss to Tennessee.
The Redskins signed Novak on Tuesday after the former University of Maryland kicker won a four-way competition among available free agents. He'll handle the kicking duties in Sunday's game against Tennessee.|||||||
Novak will replace John Hall, who was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Novak was 5-of-7 on field-goal attempts in five games in place of the injured Hall last season.
