Tolbert only had two touchdowns all season prior to Sunday's two-score effort.
Despite the presence of 1,000-yard running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, the Panthers are expecting Tolbert to see quite a bit of action on offense and special teams.|||||||
The stocky 5-foot-9, 243-pound Tolbert started 30 games over the last two seasons for the Chargers, averaging 4 yards per carry while scoring 19 touchdowns on the ground. He also caught 79 passes for 649 yards during that span, two of those going for touchdowns and became a fantasy darling in the process.
The Panthers announced Monday they've signed Tolbert from the San Diego Chargers. Tolbert spent three seasons with Ron Rivera, who was the Chargers defensive coordinator before becoming the Panthers head coach.|||||||
"Mike is a very versatile player and is they type of player who do a lot of different things," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "He can jump in and play fullback, he catches the ball well out of the backfield and plays running back. He's also an outstanding special teams player." Tolbert's agent Joel Turner said his client signed a four-year contract, but would not disclose the financial terms of the deal.
Tolbert had nine rushing yards on four carries with six receptions for 32 yards in Saturday's 38-10 loss at Detroit.|||||||
