He suffered a seizure at practice on Aug. 3, 2011, and was diagnosed with a brain AVM, or arteriovenous malformation, a prenatal condition in which blood travels abnormally between the arteries and veins. He played the first 15 games of last season but was not cleared to play for the start of this season because the incision where he had brain surgery in January hadn't fully healed.
The Philadelphia Eagles have ruled out defensive tackle Mike Patterson for their entire training camp and possibly more because the incision where he had brain surgery in January hasn't fully healed. Eagles head trainer Rick Burkholder said Sunday that a piece of Patterson's cranium was taken off in January so neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Spetzler could remove the arteriovenous malformation, a tangle of veins and arteries that doctors determined caused the seizure. Burkholder said Spetzler determined Friday after examining an X-ray and CT scan that the area of Patterson's cranium that he operated on hadn't healed sufficiently to allow Patterson to return to football.
Patterson, who collapsed and suffered a seizure at practice just 10 days ago, has returned to the Philadelphia Eagles.|||||||
