Rex Ryan says Mark Sanchez will be the New York Jets' starting quarterback for "the first snap" in minicamp, but insists there will be an open competition at the position.|||||||
The Jets coach says at the NFL meetings Tuesday that the team needs "to get better" at the position." Sanchez struggled mightily last year, and was benched in favor of third-stringer Greg McElroy for a game. New York brought in veteran David Garrard to compete with Sanchez for the job, and anything is possible with Ryan at the helm of this circus.
The Jets are hamstrung by the contract of Sanchez, who is coming off a miserable season but is guaranteed $8.25 million next season. He would cost the Jets a $17.1 million cap hit if they cut him.|||||||
Sanchez will almost certainly be back, unless the Jets can trade him. If Sanchez returns, he will likely have to compete for the starting job, and the Jets will be in the market for a quarterback in free agency or the draft.
Greg McElroy has a concussion and will be replaced by Sanchez as the New York Jets' starting quarterback in the season finale at Buffalo on Sunday.|||||||
Coach Rex Ryan says Thursday that McElroy, preparing to make his second NFL start in place of the benched Sanchez, was lifting weights and had headaches. Ryan says he chose to start Sanchez over Tim Tebow because the team has just two practices and a walkthrough to prepare before the game and he feels "more comfortable" with Sanchez. Sanchez was benched after turning the ball over five times at Tennessee on Dec. 17.
Sanchez and Tim Tebow are both active as Greg McElroy's backups in the New York Jets' regular-season home finale against the San Diego Chargers.|||||||
It is the first time all season that Rex Ryan has had all three of his quarterbacks active for a game. By having all three available, Ryan avoids having to designate either Sanchez or Tebow as the No. 2 quarterback Sunday.
Sanchez knows he won't be the New York Jets' starting quarterback this week. The one-time face of the franchise won't say whether he thinks he'll be back with the team next season.|||||||
Benched in favor of Greg McElroy for Sunday's game against San Diego, Sanchez said he hadn't thought about his future. He says that "I'm a Jet, and that's all I've known," despite the fact the team will consider all options with Sanchez - including a trade - in the offseason. Sanchez threw four interceptions and lost the football on the final offensive play as New York was eliminated from playoff contention with Monday night's 14-10 loss at Tennessee.
