Rex Ryan says Mark Sanchez will be the New York Jets' starting quarterback for "the first snap" in minicamp, but insists there will be an open competition at the position.|||||||
The Jets coach says at the NFL meetings Tuesday that the team needs "to get better" at the position." Sanchez struggled mightily last year, and was benched in favor of third-stringer Greg McElroy for a game. New York brought in veteran David Garrard to compete with Sanchez for the job, and anything is possible with Ryan at the helm of this circus.
The Jets are hamstrung by the contract of Sanchez, who is coming off a miserable season but is guaranteed $8.25 million next season. He would cost the Jets a $17.1 million cap hit if they cut him.|||||||
Sanchez will almost certainly be back, unless the Jets can trade him. If Sanchez returns, he will likely have to compete for the starting job, and the Jets will be in the market for a quarterback in free agency or the draft.

Coach Rex Ryan says Thursday that McElroy, preparing to make his second NFL start in place of the benched Sanchez, was lifting weights and had headaches. Ryan says he chose to start Sanchez over Tim Tebow because the team has just two practices and a walkthrough to prepare before the game and he feels "more comfortable" with Sanchez. Sanchez was benched after turning the ball over five times at Tennessee on Dec. 17.
